Abtenau can be reached easily from the A10 motorway (near Salzburg), traveling about 16 km through forests and beautiful landscapes. From the entrance of the mountain village of Abtenau you can see shining in the sun a metal track, a kind of track that descends down the mountain ... and a cable installation:) Coming closer, just out of the village, on the right coming from the A10, you will find Karkogel amusement park.
Sommerrodelbahn slide is the official name - and it can be of two kinds: either a concrete runway - on this kind you slip on a sled on wheels - or on rail metal - on this you slip on a sled that adheres to the rail.
At Karkogel you will find the second option, as you will see in the pictures.
You will climb by cable car and slide down - sliding, you will be caught with a seat belt and you can control the speed at which you descend by accelerating or decelerating.
The slide here has a length of 1980 meters, passing through two tunnels, the route is flagged, the curves are tight and there are signs that warn you to slow down. Do not forget to smile at the last curve - there are signs that announce that your picture will be taken:)
The price of a cable car climbing / downhill slide is around 10 euros, 16 euros two ascents; you can take up to five ascents / descents, obviously at an affordable price.
If you have the SalzburgerLand card, you have two ascents / descents included - there is no need to buy a ticket, you can use the card directly on the cable car boarding.
The sensations are an incredible experience worth trying! You will see gorgeous mountain views, you will pass through flowers and forests, you will slide quietly beside cows and horses; you can go at the right speed to admire all this - but do not forget to keep regular distance of 40 meters from the "neighbors" of course:)
In the Karkogel park you can try other ways to descend the mountain: two cars with three wheels and only brakes, down the mountain roads.
For the very small there is a park with multiple playing options, located at the foot of the existing parking - free parking. Here there is a terrace where you can relax and enjoy a coffee.
This slide should be tried out for its wonderful surroundings!
